Tyrone native Charlie Donnelly was a poet and revolutionary and Spanish Civil War soldier. He arrived in Spain on 7 January 1937 and died during the fighting on 27th of February 1937 during the battle of Jarama at the height of the Spanish Civil War. Five years ago a group of people, The Friends of Charlie Donnelly, set out with the objective of building a memorial on the battlefield to commemorate his death and the deaths of all the Irish Brigaders who died defending freedom. These two DVDs chart the course of their work to achieve their objective.

Tyrone native Charlie Donnelly was a poet and revolutionary and Spanish Civil War soldier. In July 1936, on the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he urged the Republican Congress to send fighters to the International Brigades. He himself joined the Brigade. He reached Spain on 7 January 1937 and at Albacete, met up with an Irish contingent, led by his friend Frank Ryan, known as the Connolly Column who had come to Spain to fight on the Republican side. Donnelly and his comrades were attached to the American Abraham Lincoln Battalion. Charlie Donnelly poet and revolutionary was killed on 27th of February 1937 during the battle of Jarama at the height of the Spanish Civil War.
