But this is an historic year in other ways. The Leinster championship will for the first time feature counties from other provinces with Galway and Antrim in the starting line-up. Galway are also strong challengers and the draw places them on course to face Kilkenny in the provincial semi-final. As ever, Munster provides much of the early box-office appeal with old rivals Cork and Tipperary opening proceedings in May. Cork have a new manager in former All-Ireland winner Denis Walsh and the motivation of another battle with their county board behind them.
