Remembering Vol. Brendan Burns & Brendan Moley South Armagh
On the 29th. of February 1988 the tragic news began to reverberate around the hills of South Armagh that two Volunteers had been killed in a premature explosion at Creggan outside Crossmaglen. Friends from school days, Brendan Burns and Brendan Moley were two of the most experienced members of the South Armagh Brigade of The Irish Republican Army. Their deaths were a grave blow to the Republican Movement, and the hatred that their enemy held them in was borne out by the massive British military operation of harassment and violence carried out at their funerals against mourners.
The two men grew up in an area which had become a war zone and seen an occupying force torture their community and like thousands of other young men they both took the decision to join the Republican Movement and play their part in taking on the enemy in an area where they were not welcome. For over a decade they played their part in the fight for Irish freedom paying the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. The Two Brendans tell the story through family, friends and comrades, of courage, commitment and a resolve of dedicated Volunteers. With the unflagging support of their community, they fought to break the shackles of Partition and unite in a common goal ¿The Unification of Ireland free from British Rule.¿
